Front

A line of battle

Infantry

Soldiers of military units that fight on foot. In

modern times, they typically have rifles, machine

guns, grenades, mortars etc. as weapons

Mortar

A short cannon for throwing shells at high angles

Shells

Used in cannons, they are filled with an explosive

that explodes in flight or on impact

Artillery

Large guns, stationary or mobile, used to shoot

shells over a long distance

Casualty

A member of the military who can no longer serve

due to death, wounds, sickness, capture or

because his or her whereabouts are unknown.

Armaments

The arms and equipment that a military unit is

supplied.

Blockade

To stop people or supplies from entering or

leaving a a port, harbor or a city, especially in

times of war.

Offensive

Relating to, or designed for an attack

Abdicate

To give up a power, typically when a monarch

voluntarily gives up the throne

Armistice

An agreement between two groups to temporarily stop fighting in

order to discuss the terms for peace
