Shifts in ELA/Literacy
9
Shift 1(Session #1)
Balancing Informational & Literary Text
Students read a true balance of informational and literary texts.K-4: 50% IT/50% LT5-8: 55% IT/45% LT9-12: 70% IT/30% LT
Some of the nonfiction percentages can be met in other disciplines. (ie. Science, Social Studies)
Shift 2(Session #4)
Knowledge in the Disciplines
Students make meaning about the world through the page. Students build knowledge about the world (across domains/ content areas) through TEXT rather than the teacher or activities.
Students should have more opportunities to create and discover for themselves.
Shift 3(Session #1)
Text Complexity
Students read the central, grade appropriate text around which instruction is centered. Teachers are patient, create more time and space and support in the curriculum for close reading.

Shift 4(Session #3)
Evidence-based Conversations about Text
Students engage in rich and rigorous evidence based conversations about text.
Where do you see it on the page? Point to it, quote it, talk about it.
Shift 5(Session #3)
Writing from Sources
Writing emphasizes use of evidence from sources to inform or make an argument.
This requires a departure from narrative. What is the author up to?
Students should develop a voice around/about the world based on what they have read.
Shift 6(Session #2)
Academic Vocabulary
Tier 2 words are the focus. These are words used by the author in place of common words. They change meaning with use. Words that help students develop a deep understanding.

Text Complexity
“The Common Core Standards hinge on students encountering appropriately complex texts at each grade level in order to develop the mature language skills and the conceptual knowledge they need for success in school and life” (p. 3).
