Once, the people who lived in these three main towns were mostly fishermen. Now, although fishing still takes place, most of the locals work in the tourist industry looking after holidaymakers.

There are no longer many people trying to make a living from fishing in Anse la Raye, instead, they travel 10 kilometres to Castries where they work in restaurants, hotels and shops.

Local people have jobs as tour guides. They take tourists to special places on the island.

They tell holidaymakers about the island and the plants and animals that live there.

But, there’s not much flat land in St Lucia where new hotels can be built so, land has to be cleared and that often destroys beautiful areas and damages wildlife.

The destruction of the land and its different habitats upsets a lot of local people.
