By Marilyn AndersonCANNON FALLS – On Mon-
day, August 4, Mayo Clinic HealthSystem (MCHS) in Cannon Fallsbegan providing clinic services inits new 92,000 square foot facil-ity. The hospital and emergencyservices are scheduled to move tothe new location on Thursday,August 7. Prior to the ribbon-cut-ting ceremony and public toursJuly 25 attended by approximately2000 people, Dr. Tom Witt, Presi-dent and Chief Executive Officerof MCHS in Cannon Falls, LakeCity and Red Wing and Dr. Rob-ert Nesse, Chief Executive Officerof Mayo Clinic Health System, responded to questions regardingthe new facility, including its rolealong the Highway 52 corridor.Physician comments
Dr. Witt explained the role ofthe Cannon Falls facility as beingthree-fold:
• Serving the medical needs ofthe Cannon Falls community.
• Providing a post-acute programcloser to home. Cannon Falls isamong 11 MCHS communitiesoffering Mayo Transitional Care.Witt described the scenariowhereby patients may have goneto a Mayo Clinic hospital in Roch-ester seeking special solutions fortheir health situation but still neededextended care beyond nursinghome care. “Patients can be trans-ferred to MCHS locations, includ-ing Lake City, Cannon Falls andWaseca, and be back closer to homeand their loved ones,” said Witt.He also pointed out that the sharedelectronic medical records betweenRochester and MCHS is anotherkey component in providing inte-grated care for patients.
• Potentially as a gateway forthe south metro area. Again, Wittprovided scenarios. “Rather thanpatients going all the way to Roch-ester, south metro patients can beseen here (Cannon Falls) for spe-cialized care or as an entry pointfor specialized appointments inRochester. Or they could be seenhere later, for follow-up appoint-ments, such as blood work.”
Witt also added that the build-ing was put together in a mannerto provide primary care for pa-tients.
Dr. Nesse said that Mayo’s rela-tively recent acquisition of the RedWing hospital and clinics (whichinclude Zumbrota and Ellsworthclinics) in July 2012 and the reju-venation in Cannon Falls have ledto changes in Goodhue Countyand along the Highway 52 corri-dor for medical care. “With theability to be tied together real time,
the sites are fully integrated withour operations at Mayo Clinic –Rochester. Patients can receive carecloser to their homes with infor-mation-sharing back and forth.”
Nesse went on to give an ex-ample of the options patients have– such as people living in the Zum-brota area. He said, “I can be seenas a Mayo patient in Zumbrota. IfI need something done surgically– like a hip replacement – I don’tneed to go to Rochester. I can goto Cannon Falls or Red Wing.”Grand opening attendees
Among those attending the July25 grand opening were Doug andEileen Sommer of rural Zumbrota.Living north of Zumbrota and ashort distance off Highway 52,the Sommers were interested inseeing what the new Cannon Fallsfacility was like.
Rather than going with a groupfor the tour, Doug said they tooktheir own tour. They still coveredmuch of the building’s three floorsand listened to some of the tourguides’ comments along the way.As a new building, Doug expectedit would be a good facility. “It isvery impressive, that’s for sure,”he said after seeing it firsthand.
Preferring a smaller place thanMayo Clinic – Rochester, theSommers have been going to RedWing for their healthcare. Theynow see the Cannon Falls facilityas a possible option for care in thefuture. “It is the closest hospital tous,” said Doug.
Doug Fingerson, general man-ager of Goodhue County Coop-erative Electric Association(GCCEA), toured the facility andwas present for the ribbon-cuttingceremony. GCCEA’s trust fundwas among area benefactors to thenew facility, contributing moneyfrom the cooperative’s OperationRound-Up member program.
Fingerson was impressed withthe many ways attention to detailwas carried out. Sliding pocketdoors for the patient rooms, as wellas in the clinical areas, save spaceand increase the square footage ofrooms. A wireless communicationsystem improves sending infor-mation between the care team, andeven communicating with somepatients and visitors. Fingersonthought the historical area, “wasnicely done” and the view fromthe cafeteria was beautiful.
With GCCEA’s service area nearthe new facility and the new High-way 52 interchange, Finger-sonis hoping for more growth to oc-cur. “If the area develops andgrows, there’s potential for moreservices needing to be supplied,”he said.
