BMW, Daimler and Audi jointly bought Here, a mapping service,
from Nokia, to ensure that carmakers have an independent
provider rather than having to depend on Google Maps.
Nevertheless, carmakers are also teaming up with
tech firms because each has something the other
needs. Building and marketing cars, and dealing
with safety and emissions regulators, is tricky.
Google remains the leading exponent of autonomous driving. Its
robotics, drones and search engine all contribute expertise that helps
to guide a driverless car down the road avoiding pedestrians, obstacles
and other vehicles, using computing power and sophisticated software
to interpret masses of data received both from the car’s on-board
sensors and from external sources through wireless connections.

Travis Kalanick, the Uber co-founder and boss, says his
goal is not simply to disrupt the taxi market but to make
ride-sharing so cheap and convenient that using
Uber becomes an alternative to owning a car.
Technology firms may be better placed than carmakers
to develop and profit from the software that will
underpin both automated driving and vehicle-sharing.
Profits may seep away
towards the producers
of the software and the
owners of the data, and
away from the makers
of the hardware.
Roma, 20 ottobre 2016
Some people who might hitherto
have wanted to own a car may no
longer do so, cancelling out the
growth the motor industry might
otherwise have expected from the
rising middle classes in developing
countries.

Membership of car clubs, which let people book by
app for periods as short as 15 minutes, is growing by
over 30% a year, according to Alix Partners, and
should hit 26m members worldwide by 2020.
Io no di certo.»
Carlos Ghosn (Renault-Nissan) «Il car sharing oggi interessa
l’1% delle vendite e rimarrà marginale nel business dell’auto,
non ci sarà un exploit entro i prossimi 10 anni.»
Young city-dwellers are turning their backs on owning a costly
asset that sits largely unused and loses value the moment it is
first driven. Carmakers insist that such consumers are merely
deferring buying a vehicle, pointing to the fact that people
continue to drive at an older age than they used to.

Mark Fields, Ford’s CEO, said that it would in future be
“both a product and mobility company”.
Promising to make the company’s HQ in Dearborn,
Michigan, more like the creative tech playgrounds found
at the Silicon Valley campuses of Google and Apple.

While every brand’s path is unique, those making the most impressive
strides tend to defy sector norms and have a
clear sense of self. They know when to build versus borrow. Their
brand and business are cohesive and
built around people. And they have a clear
strategy for growth. That’s what makes them Best Global Brands.
Among this year’s Best Global Brands, we find some
common hallmarks —
characteristics that are helping grow brands and businesses.

Know your customer, know yourself.
Taking the time to truly understand them — and how your
capabilities and people serve and connect to them — is critical for real growth.
Forensic detail is what yields real,
actionable insights — and how to be
singularly focused on the ones that matter most.
What results is a clear road map, one
that’s based on hard data and led by the
needs of real people. A roadmap that
can be easily understood and adopted by everyone
in your organization, and that helps engineer and
accelerate growth.
Roma, 20 ottobre 2016
Growth is a continuous process of curiosity, learning, and
development. To generate the creative energy your business
needs, your people need the permission
to challenge, the freedom to try — and
the courage to fail.
When employees know they can make a
difference, they do. It’s crucial to build the
clarity, communication, and trust that fosters
this thinking. Once you’re able to
empower individuals personally, the positive
effects will ripple outward across your entire
organization, to your agencies and partners,
and out into the real world.
Roma, 20 ottobre 2016
Growing at a healthy, continuous rate takes
vision underpinned by orchestration at every
level—from people to processes. That demands
an approach that the entire
organization can align around,
one that will boost brand and business
performance among all teams, agencies,
geographies, functions, stakeholders, and the
entire brand experience.
Growth is not a statistic. It’s not a number.
It’s ways of working, a process that’s made real
in the market. It’s the careful governance of the
people, processes, and platforms necessary to support
and succeed.
