The object and mission of the Society shall be the creation and maintenance of the preeminent national institution advancing the study and public appreciation of coins, currency, medals, orders and decorations, and related objects of all cultures as historical and artistic documents and artifacts; by maintaining the foremost numismatic collection, museum, and library; by supporting scholarly research and publications; and by sponsoring educational and interpretive programs for diverse audiences.

Collections:- Approx. 100,000 items: monographs, auction catalogs, periodicals,

pamphlets, audio-visual materials, archives, rare books - Founded 1858, first Library acquisition in 1859 - 21 librarians from 1858 – 2009- Non-circulating, open stacks (except for rare book room)- Over 10,000 rare books (auction catalogs too)- Library online catalog, separate from archives and coin databases- Archives: ca. 750 feet of records, range 1858 – 2009- Primarily gifted acquisitions; Ca. 200 items cataloged per month

Users:- More than 300 non-staff users since January 2009- Average 100-150 reference requests per month- Reference questions: 40% email, 40% in-person, 15% phone, 5% post
