Conversation Starter 130A• There is a reciprocal relationship between vocabulary

acquisition and reading comprehension. The better the students' vocabulary knowledge is, the better they perform with reading comprehension tasks. Similarly, the more the students read using the appropriate skills and strategies, the more their vocabulary develops. What are the strategies that we use in reading to build our vocabulary?

Conversation Starter 130A• Similar to other Asian countries, Viet Nam has been facing

gender inequality such as more boys going to school than girls; also, the son preference still remains in society. In fact, the gender gap at birth in Viet Nam was 114 boys to 100 girls in 2009. Many people in Viet Nam still prefer having at least a boy in the family to sustain the family lineages. Through high-tech developments in medical care, parents can even choose a baby’s gender and access abortion services easily. In my opinion, that leads to increasing gender inequality. How are these issues experienced in your country? What do you think about it?

animals are used in many ways for experimentation. Animal testing could possibly help people to understand biological systems or to develop new medicines. Still, there are moral and ethical concerns. For example, experimentation can cause suffering and pain to the experimental animals. Should animals be sacrificed for humans benefit? What is your opinion about animal experimentation?

For example, when you add two chemical compounds together, we should make sure that the product has an equal number of electrons and M.wt.Equality in general life is not so easy. Conversation Starter 130B• Most biological scientists spend a lot of time in their

research looking forward to outstanding achievements. For example, stem cells have been researched for quite a long time to replace abnormal cells, but we still have not achieved the desired result yet. Sometimes adverse results make researchers lose hope. How can we encourage them to continue? Do you know the best way to cheer up these people?

animal care and life. We believe, as veterinarians, that all animals have the same level of cognition (brain function), but some researchers say that every animal has a different level of cognition and ability to think. Do you think that animals have different levels of cognition or not? why?

1. Each group will take turns giving their persuasive speech.

2. After each group presents, any person can ask or answer questions, one at a time. You must raise your hand and be called on.

3. At the end of the debate, the mayor will decide whether or not department stores should have gender-based signs and classifications.

• Use respectful language and volume at all times.

• You do not have to agree, and it is okay to say, “Good point” or “Good question” to another student.

• Listen closely to what others say so that you can build on their comments and you do not repeat what has been said already.

PSU Course Observation and Presentation (Handout)

PSU Class Observation Assignment

• Assignment Goal: To observe a PSU class of interest, reflect upon and describe the observation experience, and deliver a formal presentation (7-10 minutes via video with PPT slides) describing the observation experience.

Step 1

• Choose a class to observe - complete this before class on Friday

• (see handout)

• Ask the professor for permission to observe(see handout for template)

– Send the email to your first choice by midnight on 1/29

– If you don’t receive a response by 2/1, send an email to your second choice

– If you don’t receive a response by 2/3, send an email to your third choice

Step 3

• Observe the class (any time that fits your schedule, but AI will be cancelled on 2/8 and 2/9 to give you time to complete your observations)

Step 4

• Plan your 7-10 minute presentation and develop PPT slides for your presentation

Step 5

• Videotape your presentation and submit the video to Nikki via BOX ( place it in your assignment folder AND send me a link) by 2/20 at midnight.
