Electronic mail , or e-mail ,is the most frequently used service on the Internet.

You can send a message any time , any where. You can send the message to several people

at the same time. You can save time. E-mail is fast, usually taking no more than a few minutes to be received. You can e-mail electronic documents and the

recipients can then edit and return revised versions.

How Email works on the Internet

Like a postal address, an e-mailaddress specifies the destination ofan electronic message.

An Internet e-mail address looks likethis: user name@domain name

The user name is a unique namethat identifies the recipient.

The domain name is the address.Many people can share the samedomain name

E-mail is sent and received through electronic "post offices" known as mail servers.

To read your e-mail, you must retrieve it from the

mail server. Once you enter the address of the recipient,compose your message, and click Send, your

Ancillary functions: File transfers, chat rooms, voice over IP

IM equivalent of an email address is your screen name (or buddy name)

Typically accomplished through a small, free program you download and install on your computer

There are also web-based versions, notably AIM Express, that can be used through a browser with no additional software

BULLETIN BOARD SYSTEM A bulletin board system (BBS) is a

computer or an application dedicated to the sharing or exchange of messages or other files on a network, the BBS was used to post simple messages between users.

A BBS may be accessible from a dial-up modem, Telnet, or the Internet. Because it originated before the graphical user interface (GUI) became prevalent, the BBS interface was text-based. Although recent Web-based versions have a graphical, interactive user interface, the text-only interface preferred by BBS purists can often be accessed by Telnet.
