What is Donation? When 13-year-old Danni was killed in a motor vehicle accident, her family chose donation.
A 10-year-old boy and a 28-year-old woman received the gift of sight thanks to the generosity of Danni’s gift. Many more lives were touched through the family’s donation of bone. In addition, Danni was an organ donor.
What Can Be Donated

Organ Donation
• Over 92,000 people are waiting for an organ transplant in the United States
• Less than 2% of all deaths have the potential to be an organ donor
Bone & Connective Tissue
• Over 300,000 individuals receive bone or connective tissue grafts each year
• Bone allografts are available in a multitude of sizes and forms
• Connective tissue allografts include fascia, tendons, and ligaments

The cancerous section of bone was removed & a bone graft was used to
save her arm.

Cardiovascular
• Heart Valves are used in a variety of cardiac surgery procedures to replace defective valves, especially in infants and children
• Allograft veins are used for shunts and cardiac bypass surgeries
Cardiovascular
Active children enjoying life following heart surgery and implant of a donor heart valve.
Eye Donation
• Over 45,000 corneal transplants occur in the United States each year. Approximately 90% of these transplants successfully restore or improve sight for individuals with severe corneal disease. Donation, within hours of death, makes corneas and sclera available for transplantation.
Eye Donation
Kimberly, 28 and Bailey, 2 are both recipients of cornea transplants. Kimberly has received one transplant from a 13 year old. Bailey has received two transplants – one donor was a 6-year-old while the other came from a 48-year-old.
Eye Donation
There is a higher demand for corneas than there are transplantable donations in North Texas.
Our Role in the Hospital
• Be aware of patients who are potential donors
• Respect the patient/family choice, whatever that decision is
• Consider our own options; talk with our families & loved ones.
*We thank our colleagues at the Transplant Services Center at UT Southwestern Medical Center for the information in this educational program.
