How did we land in K-12 Education?

• R.A. 10533“An Act Enhancing the Philippine Basic Education System by Strengthening Its Curriculum and Increasing the Number of Years for Basic Education, Appropriating Funds Therefore and for Other Purposes,” otherwise known as the “Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013,” approved on May 15, 2013, and which took effect on June 8, 2013, the Department of Education (DepEd), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), hereby issue the following rules and regulations to implement the provisions of the Act.

Assessment is the act of making judgment about something.

It is the act of qualifying a product and quantifying a performance.

Part of the Department of Education’s implementation of the Kto12 Standards-based Education program is a mandate on Assessment :

DepEd Order No. 73, s2012 (Guidelines on the Assessments and Rating of

Learning Outcomes Under K-12 Basic Education Curriculum)

…also includes a provision presenting the four levels of

assessment popularly known as KPUP.

We start with Table of Specifications (TOS).

Knowledge

We use paper and pencil tests

in assessing pupils in Knowledge Level.

We determines the pupils’ knowledge of specific facts

and information.

Types of Tests Used in Knowledge Level

Multiple Choice

Matching Type

• Constructed response type of test- It is used to determine pupil's knowledge of facts and information.- It gauge whether the understanding is sufficient, breadth and depth.- A rubric or scoring guide will be necessary.

Oral ParticipationStudent speaks and expresses

his/her self in front of the class or a group.

Reciting of poems and pieces fall in this category.

Periodic Test- exams given every quarter in

the school year- recorded and is one of the

major components of grading a student

Process- the focus is on how pupils construct meanings or makes sense of the facts and information. The following maybe asked for pupils to do as deemed appropriate for a learning area and grade level

Types of Tests Used in Process Level

Outlining, organizing, analyzing, interpreting, translating, converting, or expressing the information in another format

Completing the Table : Read the following sentences. Identify the stress of the word. Tell whether the word is used as a noun or a verb then write the word with appropriate accent. Write your answers on the answer sheet.

- the teacher provides the learners almost the same environment as the real situation that they want to depict or mimic

Understanding

–the teacher assesses the students’ ability to acquire the concepts that they have learned

Understanding Level is measured by:

- Seeking explanation / justification of something based on facts /data, phenomena or evidence

- Rating how a student tell / retell stories- Rating the students on how they make

connections of what he/she learned within and across learning areas

- Rating how the students apply what they have learned in real life situation

Product / Performance- the teacher rates the students on their

outputs in the form of (projects) sketches, drawings, models, homework and other physical requirements

- performance may also be in the form of a play and other productions that involves several skills and real situation in life

These four levels of assessment may be employed for formative assessment but should definitely be incorporated in the summative assessments which are graded.

Important: What is requisite is that the

summative assessments which are recorded for grading purposes, cover the 4 levels of assessment.

The learning outcomes which are defined by the four levels of assessment are reflected in the teacher’s class record and shall be given corresponding percentage weights.

Assessment must capture student learning outcomes. Students need to meet the standards and ideally exceed them.
