Things That Suck

The Rules

• Choose a side or stay in the middle

• State your case

• Be kind and respectful

Students learn best after an assessment task has been graded.

Afterward they can see the mistakes they’ve made and make corrections so

they don’t make the same mistakes again.

When students don’t hand in an assignment that’s a zero in the grade book.

Hopefully it’ll encourage them to do better next time; besides, what else

can I do?

All assessment tasks, formative and

summative, are part of determining the grades

on the report card.

If students do poorly on a summative test I can just make that a formative test (not for marks) on a student by student basis.

One form of assessment will work to the advantage of some students and to the

disadvantage of others.

Allow new evidence of achievement to replace old evidence. That means I can just “drop” earlier assessments.

Never grade students while they are still

learning something and, even more important, do not reward them for their performance at that point.

A mark or grade is an inadequate report of an inaccurate judgement by a biased and variable

judge of the extent to which a student has attained an indefinite amount of material.

They didn’t do well on the test so they

must not get it.
