BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Atlantic Station:• Redevelopment project that is located in Midtown Atlanta,

Georgia

• Officially opened in 2005

• 138 acres of mixed-use land

• On the former brownfield site of the Atlantic Steel Mill• Was contaminated and remidiated by its developers and AIG

Environmental, Inc

• Projected to have 15,000,000 sq. feet of retail office, residential and hotel space and 11 acres of public parks

• Received the EPA’s 2004 Phoenix Award as the Best National Brownsfield Redevelopment

• Received the Sierra Club’s 2005 America’s Best New Development Projects

REDEVELOPMENT

• Formerly the Atlantic Steel Mill, opened in 1901

• Remediation of the soil had huge costs because of

the large contamination

• Designed with energy efficiency in mind

• Many of the buildings are LEED Certified

• Developed to assist in the migration of urban sprawl

and to reduce air pollution by having people living

and working closer together

How can the negative environmental problems associated with malls

be minimized?

They could add “no smoking zone” signs in many areas and have

one place set aside for all the smoking. Also for the crime rates they

can add more security than they have right now.

What functions

does this mall play

in this community?

It is more than a

mall, it’s a living

facility. There are

lofts and a

grocery store as

well as the

upscale stores and

restaurants.

What environmental problems did you

see that we4re associated with the mall

(e.g., water

runoff, aesthetics, wildlife, loss of

habitat, traffic)?

Loss of habitat because there was little

to no animals
