Human Affects• Area is diverse but almost all of the plants are

potted• Because there are excess pots, the geckos use

them for shelter• The ivy grows on the fence instead of on the

surrounding trees

Vegetation:• 3 types of grass• 3 flower trees, about 3-5 stories high, and a

couple of younger, smaller trees (1 story).• 7 different kinds of green, leafy plants (not

including trees, and grass)• A few tropical trees, about 4-7 feet high• 1 type of plant has a red flower blooming in

the center• Moss growing on the rocks and benchesInsect/Animal Life: • 3 brown frogs, all different sizes• Groups of cream colored insects flying near

trees (approximate size of one insect – 1 mm in width and length)

• 1 Spider and a spider web by the bench• 1 Snail near the vents, on the mud

A Brief Description…•Date - August 17, 2011•Time - 1:15 to 1:30 pm•Location - Courtyard•Physical Characteristics of the Site - grassy, open, surrounded by buildings and a side walk, muddy, a few trees and many different types of plants

Human Impact:• Surrounded by brick and cement, about 1/5 of the site is paved, • Litter (pencil, glue, bottle cap)• AC vents- produce noise & heat• Metal gates• Clay pots for plants• Water drain• Pipes along walls and ground• Sprinkler• Cement benches

Observations

Lots of different types of plantation- about 20 different species (diversity of genes)

Different kinds of trees- about 7 different species (diversity of genes)

Various small grass flowers (diversity of genes)

Many crawling little insects- ants, mosquitoes, centipedes, etc (diversity of species)

Birds chirping overhead while we were observing the area around the pond (diversity of species)

If… If we had more time, we could be

more detailed with our data collecting: we could uncover more species if we had dug down into the earth

If we had excess equipment, we may be able to discover if there were any other organisms living within the pond, as well as being able to see microscopic organisms With less than half an hour, we may

have looked past some other signs of other organisms living around that area, e.g. a nest, a footprint?

Time. Some animals are nocturnal, and only comes out when night falls. We did our exploration during late noon, so we may not have had the chance to see them

We’d give the pond area a biodiversity score of 4, because the pond area has different types of trees and grass, as well as possibly having organisms in the pond

Didn’t expect the smell there; had mud all over our shoes

toad and turtles in the pond; we didn’t get a picture of it

A dead frog: can be decomposed, which

can give soil nutrition

Tiny flowers grow at the edge of the gates

Small ants around the area

The frog and and dry flowers show that

the environment is dry, judging from what

color the frog is

mostly from rain, which can tell from the

wet field and the small tunnels that direct

dirty water to other places
