ENRICHMENT MINI COURSES PROGRAM AT CARLETON

UNIVERSITY

shermeen khan

WHAT IS EMCP?• It is a program provided for students from grade

8-11• It is created to let students experience a week of

univers ity life, including understanding and knowing around campus and eating in the food court

• The EMCP has been running every year during the first week of May since 1981

WHAT IS EMCP?• It runs 5 hours a day, from 9 AM until 3 PM• A lunch break is provided for 1 hr and students

must remain on campus and can eat at the food court

• In Ottawa, there are 3 participating post-secondary institutions where you can attend the EMCP:– University of Ottawa– Carleton University– La Cité Collégiale

WHAT DID I DO• I chose the course “ All that glitters ... Is not gold”

instructed by Miranda Cobb• Overall, the course was very informative and

interesting, and also an eye-opener• During the week, I met many other students,

most of them being in grade 8, and only a couple from grade 10

WHAT DID I DO

• During the mini course, we:– watched short movies/documentaries

– “ The Story of Stuff” , “ Guns, Germs and Steel” , and “ Flow: For the Love of Water”

– took notes and learned about different types of resources

– Renewable, Non-Renewable, and Perpetual Resources

–made presentations in groups about a specific resource

– Our group chose to do Wildlife, and we chose 3 birds: dodo, northern spotted owl and seagull

ADVICE TO OTHERS

• I advise everyone to take a mini course because it’ s an amazing experience and, depending on the course, you learn things you never knew before.

• Also, you get the chance to experience a week of university and living the life of a university student

• It also gives you a chance to find your interests and what field you might want to get in to and experience the university of your choice before you go there

FEEDBACK!For me, this was DEFINITELY a

worthwhile experience because I got to spend an entire week at a univers ity and have a taste of univers ity life. You also get to meet many new people.

From this course, I learned so much and it was a real eye-opener. I’ m glad I took the course.

Some people could argue that I also got to miss out a whole week of school, but in reality, I was still at school, still learning. (Unfortunately when I came back, I was quite behind, but thankfully I’ ve [sort of] caught up now)
