Ø Jiangsu Educational Services for International Education (JESIE), based in Nanjing

Ø JESIE have run summer programs since 1997Ø Recruit 150 overseas teachers to train local

high-school English teachersØ Teachers gather in Nanjing, then sent

throughout province

Work conditions

Ø 6000 RMB per month ($US 950)Ø Full food and board in a “3-star” hotelØ No air-fare reimbursement but

transportation provided within ChinaØ Sightseeing & w/end excursions

providedØ Letter of support for 30-60 day visaØ On-site Program Co-ordinator

TEACHING program

Ø 5-6 x 45 min teaching periods per dayØ Class size of 25 – 30Ø Learners were primary and secondary school teachers Ø Syllabus focused on developing speaking, listening,

Ø Very cooperative, very attentive …..take good notes

Ø Keen to learn English and all about western countries

Ø Gracious and politeØ Family oriented culture so it was considered OK

for teachers to bring their children to class with them
