Scientific Use

of Color

An important tool in visual design is color.

While color makes visual materials more attractive, the choice of colors can

make the communication process more effective.

Guidelines for Using Colors

• Limit the number of colors in a visual to a maximum of five hues

• Group related elements in a visual by placing them over a common background colors

Guidelines for Using Colors

• Use color brightness and intensity to attract attention. Use warm colors (red, orange, yellow) to signify action.

• Use cool colors (green, blue, violet) to indicate status quo or for background information.

Guidelines for Using Colors

• Use color change (such as increasing the intensity of a color) to indicate progressive change in value or a sequence.
