STRATEGIC STUDYING

How To Graduate with...

SS

Hi, I’m Chevonnese,

I never liked studying so I found ways to trick myself to absorb the material. As a lecturer, I find that my students are suffering from the same troubles. So I am sharing with you my techniques.

I hope they help.

SS

Who Are You?Different learners study differently. Knowing who you are is the first step to charting your study roadmap. Check these outAccelerated Learning Test: http://www.acceleratedlearning.com/method/test_flash.html

Learning Styles Quiz:http://www.howtolearn.com/learning-styles-quiz/

SS

The BeginningBefore the semester or the school year begins:● Establish a sleep pattern● Start reading the

textbooks or reading material (if you know what they are)

SS

In The Class● Use different colour pens

to make jottings based on what was said.

● Listen to what is said first and then make your notes.

● Use shorthand when writing notes.

SS

Colour It UpUse a colour system to find certain information in your books easier. For example:● Pink: Definitions● Purple: In my own words● Green: Formulas● Black/ Blue: Ordinary

notes

SS

On That DayRewrite your notes in your own words and to your understanding. This activity will reinforce what you learned for the day. And highlight what you are not clear on.

SS

Index CardsExtract key information e.g. formulas, quotes, a series of events, mnemonics, etc. and write them on index cards. You can use these on the go or before an exam.

SS

On The WallWrite down key notes and post them on the walls. So during mundane activities such as brushing your teeth, combing your hair or talking on the phone, you can be studying.

SS

Group ReadingThere’s an entire textbook to read for the course. Each member of the group takes three or four chapters to read and then teach the other members of the team your section.

SS

Teach ItIf you can teach the topic(s) to someone else, you will:1. reinforce what you have

learned;2. translate it into your own

words;3. be able to access the

information easier.

SS

Memory Games● Make associations to make

the topic easier to remember.

● Tell a story with the topic(s).

● Use Mnemonics.

SS

Record ItRecord yourself reading your notes. You can play it when you are sleeping, on your way to school, or when you are working out.

SS

Schedule ItWhen are you most productive? When are you available? Make note of your class, sleep, study, group meeting, and down times. Every hour of the week should be planned.

SS

Q. vs. Q.Schedule different times for studying for qualitative classes vs. quantitative classes. I find that studying Math (quantitative courses) are better at night and History (qualitative courses) in the day.

SS

ComfortSelect a study area(s) that is comfortable but not too comfortable and away from distractions. You want to be in a state where you are receptive to the information but at the same time not put you to sleep.

SS

Your GoalBefore you start studying you must know what you would like to accomplish at the end of the session. Is it realistic? Can you accomplish it for the time you scheduled?

SS

Power NapsDon’t be afraid of taking a 10 minute power nap. It will rejuvenate your mind and make you more receptive to the information. Just don’t take them all the time.

SS

Test YourselfFind questions that cover the topic that you are studying. Monitor your progress. Identify your weak areas. Did you accomplish your goal? Check out the quiz section of http://www.instagrok.com/.

SS

Group StudyingBest when the group is no more than 4 persons. You are looking for persons who complement your talents. If all of you are the same, then all of you might understand it the same way.

SS

BalanceBalance group and individual studying. There should be time for group studying AND also individual studying. You will need to teach or learn a different perspective. And there will be times when you need to absorb it yourself.
