Hevelius

Johannes Hevelius (1611-87), son of a wealthy Danzig patrician family, was one of the leading astronomers of his time.

Who is the Johannes ?

At first he studied jurisprudence in Leiden, before he took over his father's brewery in Danzig, but soon spent all his time with astronomy.

Astronomy has won with jurisprudence

In 1641 Johannes Hevelius set up an observatory in the roof of his Danzig home, which, at that time, was the largest observatory in Europe.

The Library of Gdansk, Polish Academy of Sciences is the complete works of Johannes Hevelius. Among them are colored by the author copies of his greatest works (including "Selenografii„ and "Machinae coelestis).

The hand-painted copies of Hevelius 'Selenografii' moons can be seen in soft tones seledynowo-tan, glistening silver located onthe edges of the of craters.

A copy of "Selenografii" framed in red marokin gilt, with illustrations by the author himself-colored, intended by him to Louis XIV is in the collections of the Library of the Gdansk Academy of Sciences.

Selenografii

With his main work "Selenographie" (1647), whose splendid illustrations he engraved himself in copperplate, he produced a first, long-standing topographic study of the moon, which does not only contain a detailed description of the moon's surface, but also a description of the moon phases and the moon's librations. The Latin term "mare" for moon spots can be traced back to his works.

Johannes Hevelius presented a depiction of the entire celestial sky in his "Prodromus astronomiae", which was published posthumously in 1690.

The first volume of Machinae coelestis, the greatest works of Johannes Hevelius, contains the history of astronomy and a detailed description of Gdansk observatory.

This second volume Machinae coelestis, are descriptions of astronomical observations, descriptions of eclipses of the moon and planets, and astronomical calculations.

Machinae coelestis

Already since the fifties Hevelius interested in the subject of the comet with the publication in 1665, "Prodromus cometicus", "Kometografię" in 1668 and many smaller letters. He described the nine observations of comets.

Comet

In "Prodromusie" Heweliusz surmised that comets can move along the line of conic sections. In "Cometographii" writes about a parabola, but it also takes a straight line. Giving the "Cometographii" Review of comets to the array 1665 is opposed to assigning them any astrological or wieszczbiarskich properties, considering the phenomenon of comets strictly natural. In "Cometographii" was trying to create his own theory of comets, which formed thefoundation the new field of inquiry .

In 1672 Hevelius has observed a new comet, the description Fri Epistola de cometa, Anno 1672 .. Gedania observato Oldenburgowi dedicated to Henry.

On 22 October, 1668 years is presented "Cometografię" at a meeting of the Royal Society of London.

In 1682, she appeared again with comet Halley, Hevelius a. watched it from 26 August to 17 September 1682 year, a new self-observatory. The results were published in "Philosophical Transactions" and in"Acta Eruditorum”.
