Learning Outcomes

What a learner is expected to be able to DO...

knowledge + skills + ability

Short simple statement with an action verb.

Explain, solve, compare, present, organize....

Too vague: learn, understand, appreciate...

Assessing Learning Outcomes

Is the end result enough...or is the process acutally the outcome?

Contextualised and Authentic In Finnish vocational education:

" Competence is assessed by means of vocational skills demonstrations in the most authentic settings possible. Assessment makes diverse use of different methods. "

Examples from the basic qualification in business and administration:

The student -prepares for service situations independently-serves internal and external customers according to company instructions-carries out calculations required in sales situations

Skills Demonstrations = Process and Outcome

Descriptors (satisfactory, good, excellent) help the learners understand how to improve their performance and what the working life expects.

How do you measure and document...

Based on Clark Quinn (2011), Designing mLearning,

Using mobile devices for documenting learning outcomes

Apps + cloud-based services

Learning stories - planning, process and evaluation

Student-centered and supportive

Supporting real life assessment - show instead of tell

Authentic, transparent, mobile...

Lessons Learnt

Teachers and learners need support.

Plan! What needs to be documented? How will mobile technology be

used? Ease of use, technical

requirements?Code of conduct and copyright?Encourage creativity and

choice!

Thank you!
