Leonardo da Vinci

This is thought to be a self-portrait by da Vinci.

Leonardo was an artist as well as a scientist and an

inventor.

He studied the world

around him.

He recorded his studies in

carefully illustrated

notebooks.

By studying his notebooks, we can see how

Leonardo used drawing as a

tool to develop his ideas.

500 years ago, Leonardo invented machines that only modern technology has been able

to realize, such as this tank.

During the Renaissance,

artists began to study the

body’s internal structure.

Leonardo used careful

controlled lines to capture the

structure of the human form.

Leonardo’s drawings from 500 years ago are the basis of

today’s scientific

illustrations.
