What is education?

Education refers to any types of learning activities, including

school education, family education, personal further education, etc.

Why education is important?

Education allows people to increase knowledge and develop skills.

It helps people become more competitive in the society and develop correct values.

Education can develop talents. It helps improve socio-economic development ( 社會和經濟發展 ).

Types and stages of education in Hong Kong

Basic education: Pre-primary education ( 學前教育 ) Primary education Junior secondary education (S.1-3)

Senior secondary education and post-secondary education:

Senior secondary education (S.4-6) Post-secondary education ( 專上教育 )

Problems with the education system in Hong Kong

Students: Face pressure Lack motivation and interest in

learning The society and parents usually

neglect ( 忽視 ) students’ physical and arts development

Teachers: Heavy workload ( 工作量 ) Face more stress from work

because of education reforms

Teaching resources: Small-class teaching still cannot be

fully implemented in Hong Kong.

The government forces school that do not have enough students to close down.

Future development of education in Hong Kong

The government has increased people’s opportunities to receive higher education and promoted continuous education ( 持續進修 ).

It has allocated ( 分配 ) more resources to education reforms in order to reduce teachers’ workload.

It will provide land to develop private universities ( 私立大學 ) and have integrated ( 融合 ) development with the mainland education.
