INTRODUCTION

HISTORY

1. It was built to celebrate millennium inaugurated

by prime minister of united kingdom, Tony Blair.

2. Architects thought rotating wheel will allow the

people to have the view of whole city.

PEOPLE BEHIND THE PROJECT

1. Designed by David marks and Julia Barfield.

2. Funding for this project was done by British

Airways.

3. London eye is operated and managed by

Europe’s leading operators of visitors

Attractions, the Tassauds group.

4. Hollandia the steel work engineers.

5. POMA the capsule constructors.

PASSENGER CAPSULES

1. 32 sealed and air conditioned passenger capsules which can accommodate 25 passengers each

2. Wheel rotates with a speed 26 cm per second so that one revolution takes 30 minutes

3. Each capsule is in touch with the ground with the help of camera and radio links

THE HUB AND SPINDLE

1. The spindle at the centre of wheel structure and the hub, which rotates around the wheel are specially designed

2. Spindle is 23 m high

3. Combined weight of hub and spindle is 330 tonnes

4. The hub and the spindle are supported by two 60 m high tapered column’s called as A frames

THE RIM

1. 64 cables run from hub which rotates

around the spindle to the inner chord

2. They keep the rim at constant distance

from hub

3. 16 cables then join the outer chord to

the hub which keeps the wheel stiff as

it rotates

CONSTRUCTION AND

REALISATION OF SYSTEM

1. Main components built off site

2. Workers assembled the wheel

horizontally on the temporary

support

INSTALLATION OF SYSTEM

1. Once assembled 1300 ton structure

was slowly raised by hydraulic lifts and

cables

2. 32 capsules were attached to rim

THE CONTROL OF WIND

1. The structure has been designed to be

safe in all wind conditions.

2. capsules are aerodynamically shaped.

3. Mass dumpers are fixed to outer rim.

BOARDING AND

DISEMBARKATION

1. It does not usually stop to take

passengers on and off the moving

OPENING

1. Opened by prime minister tony Blair on

31 Dec 1999

2. Opened to public on 9 march 2000

3. On June 2008 30 million people had

ridden the London eye since it was

opened

FACTS AND FIGURES

1. It took seven years and skills of hundrend’s

of people to make the dream project

2. The spindle which holds the wheel structure

is 23m long

3. 1700 tonnes of steel were used

4. It took a week to lift it in vertical position

2. It will turn continuously an average of

8000 revolutions per year

3. Can carry 15000 visitors
