Procedures for the Cardiovascular SystemBiology 120 Medical Terminology WW HW Spring 2016Professor Abdullah

+ Introduction It is important to get cardiovascular screenings because:
The cardiovascular system distributes blood throughout the whole body
It delivers the needed substances, like oxygen, to cells It removes waste
Heart pumps the blood into arteries, veins, and capillaries Two types of cardiovascular screenings are:
Cardiac function tests which can help doctors analyze the activity of the heart
Stress Testing Diagnostic imaging can also help doctors see the organs of the
cardiovascular system Doppler Ultrasonography (veins) Echocardiography (heart)

+ Cardiac Function Test: Stress Test Also called treadmill test or exercise test
The test records your heartbeat and heart waves in an electrocardiogram when the heart is under physical stress
May be needed due to: Irregular heartbeat To see if treatments for heart disease are
working properly Chest pains/difficulty breathing An initial test that leads to other tests
Monitored Variables: Breathing Blood pressure Heart rate How tired you feel

+ Diagnostic Imaging: Doppler Ultrasound
A test that uses high frequency sound waves to measure the blood flow through the veins and arteries.
May be needed due to: Blood clots Poor circulation Blood flow study Abnormal flow within an artery or blood
vessel
Test shows: Blocked or reduced blood flow Damaged blood vessels Closing of a vein Velocity of blood flow

+ Diagnostic Imaging: Echocardiography
Also called echo test or heart ultrasound A test that uses ultra high frequency sound waves to create
heart and valve images May be needed due to:
Heart murmurs Previous heart attack Chest pains Heart defects
Test shows: Heart size and shape Weak or irregular heart muscles Heart valves problems
