MEASUREMENTMEASUREMENTAccording to Bradfield,

“Measurement is a process of assigning symbols to the dimensions of phenomenon in order to characterize the status of the phenomenon as precisely as possible.”

Functions of Measurement

According to Lee J. Cornbach (1949)• Prognosis Function• Diagnosis Function• Research Function

EVALUATIONEVALUATION• “Evaluation is the process of

determining to what extend the educational objectives are being realized.” - Ralph Tyler

Aim of EvaluationAim of Evaluation

Main aim of Evaluation is to improve educational program of the school and to make it more effective.

Functions of EvaluationFunctions of Evaluation Educational Evaluation can be considered a

process of determining:-1. The extend and how well an educational

objective is being attained.2. The effectiveness of teaching- learning

experience provided in the classroom.

Modern Concept of Evaluation put forward by Dr. Benjamin Bloom

Types of EvaluationTypes of Evaluation1. Placement Evaluation (entry behaviour)2. Formative Evaluation (process evaluation)

3. Diagnostic Evaluation (learning difficulties)4.Summative Evaluation (product evaluation)

Need and Importance of Need and Importance of EvaluationEvaluation

To fulfill classroom objectives To diagnose learning difficulties of students To determine readiness for new learning

experiences To form students' classroom groups for

special activities To assist students in their problems of

adjustment To prepare reports of pupils' progress

RELATIONSHIPRELATIONSHIPWhen we assign a score on a given task

performed by a learner, we are doing an act of measurement. When we compare this score with those of

other learners and judge whether it is good/bad/average or

satisfactory/unsatisfactory, we are doing an act of evaluation

Measurement is a part of process of Evaluation

Measurement is that part of Evaluation which is expressed in percentage,

quantity, digits, mean and average.

Evaluation depends upon measurement but it is not synonymous to it.

Evaluation encompasses but goes beyond the meaning of the terms “test” and “measurement”

Sound evaluation is based upon the results of accurate and relevant measurement.

Measurement gives an evaluator a quantitative description.

Measurement is only a tool to be used in evaluation, by itself it is meaningless

DIFFERENCES

Sound Evaluation is based upon the results of

measurement. The judgement based

upon the measurement is termed as evaluation
