MEDAN CITY

Medan is the capital of the North Sumatra province in Indonesia.

Located on the northern coast, Medan is the fourth largest city in Indonesia (behind Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bandung), and the largest Indonesian city outside Java.

The city is bordered by the Deli Serdang Regency to the east, south and west, and the Strait of Malacca to the north.

It is close to the volcano Sinabung, which erupted in August 2010 after a 400 year dormant state.

world and is in Sumatra, Indonesia. Samosir island within the lake is the island within the island of Sumatra.

Most of the people who live around Lake Toba are ethnically Bataks. Traditional Batak houses are noted for their distinctive roofs (which curve upwards at each end, as a boat's hull does) and their colorful decor.

Most visitors fly to Medan and then travel by land to Parapat, the town by Lake Toba. Parapat is about 4 hours by car from Medan (4-6 hours by public bus).

THE CITY PLAN PROJECT

Kuala Namu International Airport

Kuala Namu International Airport (also known as New Medan International Airport) is a new airport under construction to replace Polonia International Airport.

Polonia airport is the site of several crashes, is inappropriately located in the center of the city of Medan, has a difficult takeoff path and has a short runway.

The airport will be Indonesia's second largest, after Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, with 65,000 square-meter passenger terminal and will eventually have a capacity of 50 million passengers, a figure if realised today would place the airport in the top 10 busiest by passenger numbers in the world.
