NETIQUETTE KNOW HOW:WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW WHEN YOU ARE ONLINE

Amber Morris ~SHSU~LS 591

The Internet is so huge that it is important that we know some rules and guidelines that will help us enjoy the time we spend exploring.

The Internet is also very real. It sometimes seems that we are alone as we sit in front of the computer screen. However, we must remember that there is a person on the other end. We need to use our best manners or etiquette when on the computer. The term for this is “Netiquette”.

The Internet

SAFE SURFING

Here are some important safety rules to remember as you surf online.

What are they saying?

It is hard to know what someone is saying on the computer.

They can’t hear your voice or see you to understand the meaning of what they are reading. You may not have meant to be rude but it comes across that way. To help out, use visual clues.

Remember the Golden Rule.

Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.

The person on the other end of the computer has feelings just like you.

SAFE SURFINGo Respect the rights of others.Everyone has rights on the Internet just as they do in the real world. If someone is bullying you in day to day life you tell a parent or an adult. It is the same with the Internet. If someone is bullying you with emails that make you feel uncomfortable you must tell an adult right away!

o Don’t flame.A flame war is when people try to hurt each other with emails. It is not right and it is rude to send offensive emails. These can get out of hand and start a flame war. If someone flames you. Do not even respond. Let your parents or and adult know. Being involved in a flame war can get you into trouble on the Internet.

SAFE SURFINGo Obey the rules. When you are on the Internet, you must follow the same rules that you do in your everyday life. If it is against the law in the real world, it is against the law on the Internet.

oBe responsible. You are responsible for the things you say and do while you sit in front of your computer. Do not spread rumors, take things that are not yours, or hurt others.

o Respect the privacy of others and yourself.Secrets are important on the Internet. Do not give others your password, full name, addresses or interests. These things are private.

SAFE SURFINGo Do not use ALL CAPS. If you use all caps, it makes others think you are SHOUTING!

o Be brief. Time is important. Say what you need to say and then stop. There are acronyms/ abbreviations that you can use for common phrases. Check them out.

oLeave a good impression.Just like your teachers tell you, spelling and grammar are important. Check for errors before you send.

oTeach someone.Remember that you were once new to the Internet ,too. Take the time to show someone what you know. It will be big a help tothem. Just be patient.
