The Gateway Arch is the main monument of the Etruscan Volterra. This door, which opened on the south side of the wall, is characterized by a cover formed of an arch decorated with three blocks of stone heads included in its structure. The door, as we now see, is made with non-homogeneous materials and construction techniques, a sign of that has undergone many changes over the centuries. The frames are made from blocks of sandstone that is locally called Bench, block size is considerable. The three heads and bow are made with two other types of stone, the arch segments are "tuff Pignano", a limestone quarry which was located near Volterra, while the heads are carved in selagite, a rock mined in the area of Montecatini Val di Cecina. Besides having an unusual structure, the mystery surrounding this monument is due to the fact that we do not know what they represent the three heads that decorate the arch. The most reliable hypothesis is that these sculptures represent the patron gods of the city, it is probably a triad of gods who had to watch over Volterra. In the museum Guamacci urn dating to the first century. a. C., depicting a scene of siege, the action revolves around summons door decorated with three heads, this is probably the most ancient representation that we have the door of the ark. The walls contemporary port no longer exist as they were replaced by those municipalities in the first half of the thirteenth century in this part of the medieval walls follows the route of the ancient ones.
