What is phonics?

Phonics is a system of relationships between letters and sounds in a language.

Key Vocabulary

Speaking and listening lay the foundations for phonics learning.

Emphasis on attuning to sounds and auditory discrimination.

Developing vocabulary and language comprehension.

Begin oral blending and segmenting.

Continuum across the year groups.

The children learn that groups of letters can represent one sound e.g. ay in play, ee as in tree and igh as in high.
