On December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks, an Afr ican-American woman boarded a bus in Montgomery, Alabama.

She sat in the middle section of the bus, closest to the front, reserved for the “whites” only.

As soon as their seats f i l led, and more white men boarded the bus, the bus dr iver insisted that she and the other Afr ican-American people retreat to the back of the bus.

She refused and was arrested.

ROSA PARKS

Led 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott as a result of the arrest of Rosa Parks for refusing to give up her seat.

Martin Luther King Jr.and all other African-Americans refused to ride on the buses. Instead they walked or put together carpools.

This boycott lasted 13 months.
