Information practices in the humanities
• A Research Information Network report• develop an in-depth understanding of humanities
researchers’ approaches
to discovering, accessing, analysing, managing, creating, refining and disseminating information resources
• Looked at users of specific online resources, humanitiesdepartments, a research field, an international collaborative project

Information practices in the humanities
• Growth in systematic collaboration• More complex research• Less time for research (occurs in bursts)• Some barriers:
• Lack of linking between archives• Lack of standadisation of online databases and archives• Difficulties in data linking arising from the lack of standardisation, and the
inconsistencies in quality, reliability, and functionality across different resources
Need for collaborativeenvironment, shareinformation sources
Support for cross disciplinary research e.g.
digital humanities
Need information in one place, remotely

University libraries and information services could help by providing a structure
that maintains digital tools and archives and promotes development of innovative
resources.

A solution?
• A single European resource for research library content• Standardised data• Interface designed specifially for the needs of researchers• Digitised content from all of Europe’s research libraries

• A valuable resource for researchers with full-text searchcapabilities
• A robust network of national and research libraries• An efficient sustainable aggregation model for research
libraries across Europe

Creating the business model
• Model the library landscape in Europe in order to recommend a sustainable, domain-wide framework for aggregating library content into Europeana, building on the mechanisms developed in the project, in an efficient, scalable and cost-effective way.
• Develop a new and enhanced business model and business plan for The Europeana Library in support of its role as the libraries domain aggregator for Europeana, including governance, legal aspects and copyright issues specific to the project

The Value Proposition
• What do research libraries want?• Enabling searching of bibliographic records of texts in hard copy
and metadata for related digitised texts at the same time• Offering OCR services for providers’ digital content to support full
text searching in the portal Pushing the data out to other academic / research services
• Providing access to universities’ own digital repositories…and more?

This is just the beginning…
• Not just for humanities- social sciences, lingusitics and more…across the globe• News ways to exploit library metadata• More research content from othersources
