DESCRIPTION

This PowerPoint introduces students to the idea of light reflection. Included in this presentation you will find several diagrams that show how light is reflection in concave and convex mirrors.

Reflection and MirrorsPages 548-551

What you will learn… Types of reflection How to use mirrors for image quality I can predict the path of reflected light

from flat, curved, or rough surfaces I can explain why the ground gets warm

during the day I can draw ray diagrams to indicate how

light reflects off objects or refracts into transparent media

When Light Strikes an Object Three options

Reflected, absorbed, or transmitted Most objects reflect or absorb

Opaque—a material that reflects or absorbs all of the light that strikes it Wood, metal, cotton

Transparent Objects that transmit light

Clear glass, water, & air

Translucent Materials that allow some light to pass

through

Translucent, Transparent, or Opaque

Translucent, Transparent, or Opaque

Translucent, Transparent, or Opaque

Translucent, Transparent, or Opaque

Reflection You can see most objects because light

reflects, or bounces, off them.

Regular Reflection Angle of Reflection = Angle of Incidence

Diffuse Reflection When parallel rays of light hit a bumpy,

or uneven surface Most objects reflect this way

Mirrors Sheet of glass that has a smooth, silver-

colored coating on one side.

Plane Mirrors Produces an image that is right-side up

and the same size as the object being reflected

Image is called “virtual image”

Concave Mirrors Mirror with a surface that curves inward Type of image depends on position

Convex Mirrors Mirror with a surface curved outward

Questions 1. Complete this diagram in your notes

Questions 2. Complete the ray diagram for this

concave mirror

Questions Complete the ray diagram for the

following convex mirror

Questions Why does the ground become warm

during the day?

Questions Explain the difference between a regular

reflection and diffuse reflection. Draw a diagram that supports your response
