AWARENESS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS REGARDING THE CONTENTS OF THE

CODE OF STUDENT DISCIPLINE: A SURVEY

New Era University is a private, non-sectarian educational institution established by the Iglesia ni Cristo. It aims to develop among its students’ academic excellence, professional responsibility and social awareness founded on genuine Christian principles. NEU upholds the constitutional mandate that all schools shall aim to inculcate love of country, teach the duties of citizenship, and develop moral character, personal discipline and scientific/technological/vocational efficiency for national development. As an institution of higher learning, the University further aims to provide curricula relevant to the national development goals of the country.

established the Code of Student Discipline for College and Graduate School Students (Revised 2011) a handbook that contains seven (7) articles and a total of twenty-seven (27) sections. This handbook states the privileges of the students as well as their duties and responsibilities. It also contains the offenses a student may commit and its corresponding sanctions.

University and has been qualified as a student, he/she must receive a copy of the Code of Student Discipline (CSD). It is also their commitment to know his/her duties and responsibilities, to behave properly, and to respect the right of others.

INTRODUCTIONThe applicability of the code pertains

to all college and graduate school students enrolled in New Era University Main Campus in New Era, Quezon City and its branches in Lipa City, Batangas; San Fernando City, Pampanga; and General Santos City, South Cotabato.

This study aimed to determine the awareness of college students regarding the contents of the Code of Student Discipline (CSD). The researchers hoped to gather benchmark data’s that could be used as a basis in improving the implementation of the CSD.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions: How may the profile of the respondents be described in terms of: Age; Gender; Course/Major and Department.

How many of the respondents carry a copy of CSD all the time, while inside the school premises?

How much awareness does the respondent have regarding the CSD? 4.1. Over-all ranking 4.2. Article IV Duties and Responsibilities of students, Section 2. 4.3. Wearing of proper black closed shoes for females 4.4. Proper haircut for male students 4.5. School Identification Card (I.D.)

Had they experienced doing student service for violating the CSD?

METHODOLOGYResearch Design

The researchers utilized the Descriptive Survey Method in determining the awareness of the college students regarding the contents of the Code of Student Discipline. A survey is an attempt to collect data from members of the population in order to determine the status of that population with respect to one or more variables. According to Megunda (2005) survey design also enabled the researchers to summarize and organize data in best if the investigation is centered on explaining the present condition and its relationship to a certain phenomenon. This design goes beyond data gathering, it tries to relate finding to prevailing facts. (Best, 2000)

Respondents  

The respondents of this study were twenty-five (25) college students of New Era University Main Campus in Quezon City. The researchers are assured that these respondents had provided the necessary information accurately.

The respondents were chosen through simple random sampling. The researchers got five (5) college students from five (5) selected departments of New Era University Main Campus, making a total of twenty-five (25) respondents.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS In line of the data analyzed, the following summary of findings was stated: On the profile of the respondents. 1.1 Fifteen or 60 percent are within the age bracket 16-17. 1.2 There were nineteen or 76 percent female respondents. 1.3 The respondents were equally distributed, five or 20 percent, in terms of their courses. 1.4 The respondents were equally distributed, five or 20 percent, in terms of their departments.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS On how frequent the respondents carry a copy of CSD inside the school premises. More than one half, seventeen or 68 percent do not carry a copy of CSD.

On how often the respondents read their copy of CSD. Less than one half, twelve or 48 percent seldom read their CSD.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS On the awareness of the respondents on the contents of the CSD.

4.1 Less than one half, eleven or 44 percent said that their over-all awareness is average or fair.

4.2 More than one half, fifteen or 60 percent said that it is Section 1 in the Article IV that states during school days, students are strictly required to wear the current and complete school uniform prescribed by the university.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS4.3 More than one half, nineteen or 76 percent said that wearing of the current and complete uniform includes wearing of the University identification card.

4.4 More than one half, fourteen or 56 percent said that for males, hair should not touch back collar of shirt.

4.5 More than one half, sixteen or 64 percent said that written letter will be the result if the identification card is tampered and/or deface.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS On the respondents who had been reprimanded by the OSD officer. More than one half, twenty-one or 84 percent answered no.

On the respondents who rendered student service for violating the CSD. More than one half, twenty-four or 96 percent answered no.

On the violations the respondents committed. Less than one half, four or 16 percent mentioned their violations.

CONCLUSIONS In reference to the findings presented and under the condition in which the study was conducted, the researchers arrived at the following conclusions:

1. There is a greater number of students who does not bring their copy of CSD while inside the school premises.

2. Most of the students seldom read their copy of CSD.

CONCLUSIONS 3. There is an average or fair over-all ranking of the students’ awareness in the contents of the CSD. However, most students fail to answer the contents of Article IV Duties and Responsibilities of Students, Sections 2 and 3.

4. Most students have not experience being reprimanded by the OSD officer.

CONCLUSIONS 5. Majority of the students have not experienced rendering student service.

6. Not all students who were reprimanded were given sanctions or were asked to render student service.

RECOMMENDATIONS The presented conclusions had provided the researchers with sufficient information, thus, several recommendations have been formulated.  

Students need to attend the orientation that is held annually by their respective departments. They must also read the contents of the Code of Student Discipline before enrolling every semester, this will help them to be familiarize with the rules and responsibilities they should adhere to.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Teachers need to hold their own orientation inside their classroom, especially during the first day of the class. They should give it as an assignment to read the CSD and then the next day they can talk about the contents. They can also provide an open forum of the rules the students do not understand and/or is confused about. They should also be the role model in implementing the rules.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Office of the Student Discipline Personnel need to organize an annual orientation specifically allotted for the awareness of the general behaviors that are to be followed by the students. The punishment and sanctions they give to the students should be parallel to what is written in the CSD.

RECOMMENDATIONS

School Administration need to be part of the team that is concerned with the implementation of the CSD. They should also enhance the handbook and provide pamphlets that are interactive so that students can easily understand the rules and regulations of the school.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Parents need to be familiar with the basic school rules so that they can continually remind their children before going to school. They should read the contents to provide proper guidance to their children.

RECOMMENDATIONS

Future Researchers need to undertake researches and/or studies similar to this that targets a greater number of respondents. They can also include in the survey the staffs and other school personnel.
