A. Region

• Is an area that has common characteristics. (things in common)

B. Location

• There are 2 types:1. Absolute location

2. Relative location

• Where are we? Is the question that location answers.

1. Absolute location – your exact point on the earth. You must see lines of latitude and longitude for absolute location

2. Relative location

a. This refers to your position using landmarks or directions.

b. Giving someone directions to Roton MS is relative location.

D. Human-Environmental Interaction

• How do people change the environment?– building houses– cutting down trees– planting trees

E. Movement

• Movement of:

– people – goods – ideas

2. Geography

• Physical Characteristics of a place : – Land– Mountain ranges– Rivers– Oceans – Climate

• Human characteristics of a place:– countries– cities– population– economy – religion– language – resources

3. Geography of Latin America

• Latin America is made up of 3 regions.

1. Middle America (Mexico + Central America.

2. The Caribbean

3. South America

• How do the natural resources of a nation/region help to define it?

2. Central America

Geographical features• Central America is an Isthmus- a narrow

piece of land surrounded by water on two sides and connects two large landmasses.

Natural Resources

- coffee

- Sugar cane

- cacao

The Caribbean• Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and

Hispaniola are the 4 major Islands.• Hispaniola is made up of two countries:

Haiti and the Dominican Republic.• Haiti’s main problem is Deforestation-

the cutting down of trees for another use

3. South America

Geographical Features• Andes Mountains-The very large

mountains that travel down the western coast of South America.

• Amazon Basin- This contains the largest rainforest in the world. Rainforest- a large evergreen forest with a lot of rainfall.

• Amazon River- The second longest river in the world.

• The people around the Amazon river have built a dam that helps them make power using the water called hydroelectricity.

• Pampas- flat grassland regions in Argentina. Raising cattle.

What affects Climate?

1. Elevation- Height above sea level

2. Location- Countries closer to the equator (warmer)

3. Wind Patterns- winds move cold air from N. + S. Pole to equator, and warm air from equator to N. + S. Pole.

                      

                   

               

                  

                      

One-Resource Economy

• One-Resource Economy- an economy that depends on one resource or crop.

• Why? – sometimes the one resource is destroyed and can hurt the economy

• Diversify- add variety • By----- adding more resources!
