BEGINNING OF NUOCW

+ Launched OCW site in December 2005.– In 2004, Prof. Miyagawa asked to join OCWC– Our president asked the preparation committee two

important questions: (1) what is the impact of OCW? (2) If we would launch our OCW site, what would be our

novelty that has not realized in the other university that launched OCW?

+ Idea to provide lecturer’s teaching tips and one-minute class introduction (video summary) through our OCW site

+ Asked students to nominate good lecturers– Some of them provided his/her course materials

though his/her web-site+ No teaching tips

– No one provided information of how they actually taught classes

– Those tricks help not only emphasize student involvement to the class but also let them lead to deeper study on subjects

IDEA OF TEACHING TIPS

BOARD GAMES, A TO Z

The objective of the courseto acquire basic knowledge and skills for research, reasoning, negotiation, and expression through foreign board games.

+ German board game is assigned+ Explanation of the rules of the assigned game+ Play+ Presentation on the game, its mechanic and

strategic analysis, results of its evaluation from educational and cultural perspectives.

BOARD GAMES, A TO Z

+ In the preparation stage, the biggest challenge was to organize a lesson that would actually function as a multilateral literacy class while using board games, pure means of entertainment. In the end, the decision to use foreign games turned out to be correct, as playing these games involve so many activities regarding literacy, such as understanding the rules, explaining the rules to others, discussing strategy through playing the game, and understanding foreign culture, just to name a few.

+ Students get excited of the contests. They discuss their ideas over and over and notice the importance of creativity. But soon they realize their lack of knowledge of aerodynamics, physics, machine designing and so on. These will lead them to learn those subjects in deep.

CONCLUSIONS

+ Two of unique features of NUOCW:– Teaching tips– One-minute class introduction (video summary)

+ OCW may be more beneficial if instructor’s tricks and thoughts are also organized as courses. – Provision of teaching and learning tips– Exchange of ideas and expertise.
