YES! Australian

mothers should be

discouraged from

homebirth.

BUT FIRST…

What is Home birth?

Home Birth – is an attended or

unattended child-birth

In non – clinical setting using natural

childbirth methods; that takes place in

the residence rather than the hospital

and usually attended by midwife or lay

attendant with expertise in home

birthing.

HOME BIRTH

Home Birth have a high

mortality rate for

unborn babies and have

a high safety risk and

death rates associated

with it compared to

hospital/clinic births.

The preferences

of the Mother

should not be

allowed to take

over the child

safety and put

their lives on

risk.

• Mother’s should understand that there is a huge possibility and risk that the child might die by choosing to have a homebirth.

• Mother’s should know that morally it is their responsibility and duty of care to avoid putting her own child at increased risk.

• Mother’s have their own rights to choose of where and how are they going to give birth, but they don’t have the right to put their baby at risk.

If something

goes wrong

there is often

insufficient

time to get

expert

assistance.

• Even though it has been judged that the mother and the unborn child is safe from homebirth, you can’t be so sure that the child is in good condition and there is a high possibility that unforeseen complication can arise that need attention more than a assistance of midwife.

• It is a best decision to give birth in the hospital where all the equipment or apparatus you need is there to support you in terms of emergency because a life of a child is so important that you wouldn’t realise it’s gone in a ‘nick of time’.
