WHAT IS SUMMER SLIDE?

ProblemA study by Johns Hopkins University revealed that low-incomestudents lose approximately two months in reading achievement overthe summer.

WHO'S AFFECTED?

SolutionMany parents have begun enrolling their children in summer learningprograms. If that's not an option for you, the tools I've included in thispresentation should help.

WHO'S AFFECTED?

ReviewsUse the summer as opportunity to further explain/go over conceptsthat your child may have struggled with during the year. A little moretime on certain subjects goes a long way.

Reading Lists With your child, select age appropriate books in which they findinterest, and create a schedule/plan for them to complete the list bysummer’s end.

JournalingEncourage your child to journal about what they learned in a givenday or during the week as a personal record, and a way to strengthenwritten communication. Or, encourage free, creative writing and/orpoetry as a way of building expression.

FieldtripsConsider family field trips to farms, the zoo, new cities, and museums. The amount of opportunities to learn and experience new things atthese locations are plentiful.
