Science, Mathematics & Technology

Education

Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat,

Oman 4 - 7 November 2012

Why Physics Courses Are Seldom Offered Online

Uncertainty about how to offer a

valid lab component with online courses

Difficulty moving outside the box of

the campus laboratory experience

Doubts that students can

independently perform lab work in nontraditional

places

Doubts that off-campus lab work

can be as effective as formal

laboratory work

Why Now Is the Time for Online Physics Course

Substantial declines in the cost of computer technology and

corresponding increases in computer ownership The continuing rise in

computer literacy among the general

population

The coming of age of highly computer-savvy generations

Improvement in and global dissemination of

access to high-speed broad band technology

Continuous improvements in the quality, features, and

user-friendliness of online learning-management

systems for both instructors and students

Dramatic declines in states’ and institutions’ financial recourses to

stock, staff, and maintain undergraduate

laboratory facilities

Increasing time, costs, and inconvenience

associated with commuting to a college

campus

In the following slides, I am going to show how I will conduct my On-Line physics teaching and how I compare my On-Line physics teaching

with my In-Class physics teaching.

My Future Outlook For an Online Physics Course

The road of learning different teaching

techniques can continue for ever and ever.

And my future outlook is to design a physics

textbook that has many digital tools such as

animations and summaries that can be

downloaded onto an MP3 player, iPod, and

iPhone audio or video.

Thank You
