The Murray-Darling is the longest river in Australia. It is the 16th largest river in the world. It is 2310 miles ( 3680km ) long. The Murray-Darling is actually two rivers. The Murray and the Darling. It 's source in Queensland.

The name

The name Murray-Darling comes from two men. Secretary George Murray and Governor Ralph Darling.

The sourceThe source of the Murray-Darling is Queensland. The Murray-Darling flows through Corryong, Albury-Wodonga, Echuca, Moama and Swan Hill. The mouth of the river is at Abelaide.

The River

The Murray-Darling was explored in 1824 by William H. Hovell and Hamilton H. Hume. The Murray-Darling was discovered by a man called Charles Sturts.

The BasinThe basin of the Murray-Darling is the home to many living creatures. Including..80 different species of mammals 55 species of frogs46 species of snakes5 species of tortoises 34 types of fish

Drainage

The drainage of the Murray-Darling is great for many people. It drains the water from Victoria, New South Wales and Southern Queensland. One of the most interesting things is the drainage system in the Murray-Darling has been the same for millions of years.

When I was small I went to Australia with my Mammy and my Granny. It is very hot out there so rivers are very important. It barely ever rains, but when it does it is very heavy! So they need rivers to drain the water from roads.

The Murray

The Murray is actually a separate river to the Darling. It is only when they enter the sea that they join. The Murray alone is 2508km.

The Darling

The River Darling is nearer to New South Wales then the Murray. The Darling alone is 1472km. Together they are the Murray-Darling ( 3680km )
