The piano is an instrument with a keyboard. It has 88 keys. Pianos use the keys to move hammers that hit strings inside, making a sound.The keyboard has black and white keys.

Bartolomeo Cristofori of Padua invented the piano.

He made his first piano in 1709. It was invented at the beginning of the 18th century. 50 years ago it started to become popular

The people who play the piano are called pianist. First the piano was called the “fortepiano”It means “loud-soft” in Italian. Later this name changed to “pianoforte”. The people normally shortened to “piano”.

The first time the piano was played in a public concert in London was in 1768 when it was played by Johann Christian Bach.

Larger pianos have three pedals but other pianos have two pedals. The pedal on the right is called the damper pedal. The pedal on the left is called the soft pedal and the pedal on the middle is called the sostenuto pedal.

The piano is part of the percussion section.

The people who play the piano have to learn a lot of things. It´s important to sit with a straight back, so that hands can reach all the keys. Reading music helps a person to become a better pianist and musician.
