Review of

Traditional

Literature

People have always loved stories.

• Today we read stories in books and watch stories through

Television, the internet, and the movies.

• But when your grandparent’s grandparents were kids there was no

tv, no internet, no movies, no radio.

• Many people could not read.

• Many people could not afford books if they could read.

• But people still wanted stories.

In ancient times, people made up stories to tell each other

Every culture

all over the world

has had stories passed down

from one person to the next for

hundreds of years.

People told stories to:

• entertain

• teach a lesson

• teach important ideas

The best stories were

told over and over by

different people. Often

details were added.

These are some Traditional Stories

you may be familiar with. Can you

work with a partner to think of three

more?

stop here and make a list with students

Traditional stories / folk tales we know:

Itsy Bitsy spider

Jack and the Bean Stalk

Princes and the Frog

Cinderella

Three little pigs

Beauty and the Beast ?

Stone Soup

Little Red Riding Hood

Rumplestiltskin

Rapunzel

Today I want

to share

one of my

favorite

Traditional Stories

Daily buzz word

This morning we talked about how people have passed

down stories for hundreds of years.

We still do this!

I’m going to tell you a story that has been passed down in

my family.

Then, for writing today

I want you to think of a story that your parents or grandparents

have told you and begin to write this down so that you can share

it with the class later this week.

Even though there are traditional stories

(aka folk tales) from every culture around

the world most folk stories have a few

elements in common

People told stories to:

entertain

teach a lesson

teach important ideas
