What Is UDL?

UDL is an approach that uses instructional strategies and also incorporates technology

to help support diverse learners. UDL meets the needs of every student.

Inspiration Cont.The goal in teaching is for every child to learn. But, as we all know, not every student learns in the same way. Each student is unique in their learning. Leaning in a traditional classroom is not possible for all students. Students with disabilities really struggle with this task. We, as teachers, compensate for the variation by adapting how we present the lesson and test for understanding. Because of UDL these adaptations will be built into the curriculum materials. UDL uses technology that makes success possible for every student. Students will now have options with their learning. (Firchow, 2010).

Brain Research

Learning is distributed into three different types of networks in your brain.

Recognition

Recognition is the “what” of learning (it processes patterns). It is how we gather facts and categorize what we see, hear, and read. Identifying letters, words, or an author's style are recognition tasks.

StrategicStrategic is the “how” of learning, which processes actions and plans. Planning and performing tasks. How we organize and express our ideas. Writing an essay or solving a math problem are strategic tasks.

AffectiveAffective is the “why” of learning, which processes emotions and evaluates patterns. How learners get engaged and stay motivated. How they are challenged, excited, or interested.

Three Principals of UDL and Examples

Provide multiple means of representing or presenting information (powerpoint, podcast, elmo, etc.)

Provide flexible methods for students to express understanding (wikis and blogs)

Provide flexible ways for students to engage in the learning process. (online collaboration)

Examples of Teaching Methods by CAST

To support diverse recognition networks: Provide multiple examples Highlight critical features Provide multiple media and formats Support background context

To support diverse strategic networks: Provide flexible models of skilled performance Provide opportunities to practice with supports Provide ongoing, relevant feedback Offer flexible opportunities for demonstrating skill

To support diverse affective networks: Offer choices of context and tools Offer adjustable levels of challenge Offer choices of learning context Offer choices of rewards

Central Role of Technology in UDL

Technology plays a very important role in UDL. If technology was not available, then UDL would not be possible. The main role of technology is to provide

options for student learning. Since not all students learn the same, technology gives

every student the opportunity to learn.

Students that feel successful will want to learn more.

Successful students will provide a more positive learning environment.

UDL Supports all Diversity

Students come into our classrooms from many different cultures and

ethnicities. They have diverse linguistic and academic backgrounds. UDL

supports these differences and allows for various learning options.
