1. What is a desert? An area that receives less than 250
millimetres of rainfall annually
2. How hot does it get during the day? 500C
3. How cold does the desert get at night? -200C
4. Most deserts are made of rocks and stones.
Arid Desert• Located between 20°-30° from the equator
• Little humidity
• More solar radiation during the day hot, dry days
• Easy to lose heat during the night
cold, dry nights
• Low rainfall in concentrated periods
Semi-Arid Desert
• Located between 30°-50° from equator
• Weather:
• Long, dry summers
• Cool evenings
• Low rainfall in concentrated periods
Cold Desert
• Winter: long and cold characterised by snowfall• Summer: moist, moderately warm• Mean temperature range: -210C to 40C
Coastal Desert
• Location: Western edge of continents near the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn
• Cause: cold ocean currents
• Weather:• Summer: moderately warm and
long• Winter: cool
