• The raw material used for fertilisers is urea which was first discovered by Hilaire Rouelle in 1773.

• Since 1828, it has been possible to artificially synthesise this organic compound using Ammoniaas a base.

• Today, Ammoniais produced on an industrial scale using natural gas, air and water as components.

• It is vital to produce hydrogen gas by breaking up natural gas.

• The so-called Haber-Bosch process is the reaction between hydrogen gas and nitrogen gas to produce ammonia.
