Planned to enter in service on the Italian
High Speed network on 2015
Producer: Ansaldo Breda-BombardierYear: 2013-2015
Characteristics:• Fully interoperable train suitable for all
European Countries• Commercial speed : 350 km/h
Italcertifer Activity:Certification of the whole train
AnsaldoBreda-Bombardier train ETR 1000
The certification steps
1. Design documents evaluation
2. Construction survey
3. Test in laboratory for single compo-
nents and for the whole train
4. Test on line
Activites performed - 1
Identification of all applicable norms,
standards and rules
Identification of all safety related sub-
systems/functions and their organiza-
tion in a WBS structure.
Assessment of all systems and
functions on the basis of the rela-
ted documentation and test reports
Activites performed - 2
Issuing of verification reports for each WBS
issue and for each related phase
Phase 1 - Concept design
Phase 2 - Detailed Design
Phase 3 - Type tests
Phase 4 - Track Tests
Verification that the design and construction are compliant
with the existing “Codes of Practice” (TSI requirements and
EN standard) in order to assess that the mitigation mea-
sures lead the hazards to an acceptable risk level (as per
EU Regulation 352/2009)
Issuing of national certificates and EC certificates according
to the Rolling Stock TSIs for a service speed of 300 km/h.
Several tests have been performed in lab in order to verify the resistance, strength and
endurance of the pantograph, simulating in a short time the entire lifecyle
Pantograph lab tests
Pantograph running tests
Innovative measure set up based on optical sensors with Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG), located
on the roof and intrinsically isolated.
Video surveillance camera and arching detectors customized for the high speed test with
great attention to aerodynamic impact in order to verify the interactions pantograph-catenary
Acceleration and Displacement tests….
180 acceleration test points measured on 4 different trains with the scope of characterize
comfort, running stability, active lateral suspension response.
20 displacements test points measured on suspensions, dampers and actuators in order to
characterize the running dynamic and the dynamic response of the different system (suspended
motor, active lateral suspension, primary suspension…)
Strain gauges tests
100 full bridge channels (about 900 strain gauges) on 6 instrumented wheelsets, 140 telemetry
channels with the scope of characterize track-wheel interaction forces and axle strain.
Forces tests
Many parts of the train have been instrumented and calibrated in order to measure
forces during the on-track test to characterize sub-system of the vehicle: Active Lateral
Suspension, Traction’s performance.
Pressure tests
50 measurement points: 30 external, to characterize the pressure on the train surface
and the air speed; 20 internal, to characterize the pressure comfort inside the train
Temperature measurements
20 measurements points to characterize the temperature of the electrical and mechanical
system and 12 measurements points on braked wheel web in order to characterize the
web temperature during the braking
The body-bogie rotation
The vehicle’ bogie-
body rotation has
been tested by using
the specific bench
available in our rol-
ling stock laboratory,
located in Osman-
noro (near Florence)
Some benches used…
Semi-anechoic chamber Body resistance
Simulation of track distorsion Brake components
The tests on line in Italy…
The tests on line covered
both the mechanical and
technological components,
like wheels, braking sys-
tem, body, engines, signa-
ling equipments,...

TS04 to certificate the train for the commercial speed of 300 km/h
January 2015 - today: Further investigations in order to prepare the next set of test up to
390 km/h to certificate the train-set for the commercial speed of 350 km/h
The next steps ….
The issuing of the EC certificates for 350 km/h service speed is
foreseen by the end of 2015.
The relative tests are planned on a suitable Trial Site already identified
(the Italian High Speed Line Milan-Turin)
