INTRODUCTION AND IDEA

PRODUCTION OF LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE PRODUCING ECONOMIC CONCRETE BY REDUCING

THE COST OF MATERIAL ECO-FRIENDLY RECYLING AND REUSING WASTE EFFECTIVELY.

THUS PROCTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT FROM POSSIBLE POLLUTION EFFECT

TO INTRODUCE A NEW AGGREGATE IN THE MIX DESIGN TO LOWER THE CONCRETE DENSITY AND COST.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT Study of the effect of using Palm Kernel shells in concrete

and its benefits. Improve the overall durability and long-term performance of

concrete structures. An approach towards the use of the alternative materials as

concrete admixture. Reducing pollution by using a waste material like Palm

Kernel shells as an aggregate. Comparative cost study between plain concrete and concrete

added with Palm Kernel shells.

BENEFITS OF USING PALM KERNEL SHELLS

Increases the Compressive Strength. Reduction in economy of construction. Reduction in time of construction. Improves the Ductility of the mix. Provides the Flexural Strength . Reduction in density of concrete.

COLLECTION OF PALM KERNEL SHELLS

RESHAPING(PROPER SIZE)PALM KERNEL SHELLS IN APPROPRIATE FORM AND SIZE

TREATMENT OF PALM KERNEL SHELLS FOR THE CONCRETE MIX

DESIGING A CUBE (approx. 150mm x150mm x 150mm )

TESTING OF SAMPLE AT DIFFERENT PROPORTION OF PALM KERNEL SHELLS FOR VARIOUS STRENGTH PARAMETERS.

TESTING MATERIAL USED IN THE PROJECT SUCH AS CEMENT, SAND, AGGREGATES.

PROPOSED METHODOLOGY

RESHAPING PALM KERNEL SHELLS

They are collected from local fields and sun dried for 1 month.

Then the shells are cleared from the fibers and crushed manually.

Then it is washed and allowed to dry under ambient temperature for another 1 month.

The particle size of the Palm Kernel shell ranges from 10 to 20 mm.

The surface texture of shell is fairly smooth on concave side and rough on convex side.

MATERIAL TESTING Material testing will include the testing of four

materials CEMENT AGGREGATE AND PALM KERNEL SHELLS SAND

TESTS TO BE PERFORMED WITH CEMENT

Procedure before casting After performing the above test on different material for the

concrete we will form a concrete mixture of M25.

Mix proportion for M25 grade of concrete is 1:1:2(cement, fine aggregates, coarse aggregates)

Since we are using Palm Kernel shell as a course aggregate, so we will mix Palm Kernel shell with the coarse aggregate in fix percentage such as 10%, 25%, 50% .

E.g. If we are making M25 grade concrete by 1 kg of cement, 1kg of fine aggregate and 2 kg course aggregate. And in this we are using 10% of Palm Kernel shell as an course aggregate then we will mix 1800 gm of coarse aggregate and 200 gm of Palm Kernel shell.

Now we will go for casting the concrete.

CASTING Concrete blocks of size 150mm x 150mm x150mm will be cast

The concrete in the cube must be fully compacted with compacting bar or vibrating hammer or table. After 24 hours these moulds are removed and test specimens are put in water for curing.

For curing, the specimen is kept submerged in fresh water until taken out for testing after 7, 14 and 28 days. The temperature of water must be 27 + 2o C.

Minimum 3 to 2 specimens of each mix proportion containing different percent of Palm Kernel shells (10%, 25%, 50% and by weight of cement).

COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TESTING

The compressive strength of concrete with different mix proportions is performed after intervals as-

7 days test 14 days test 28days test

CHECK FOR THE ECONOMY OF THE PROJECT

The Cost Of The Concrete Block Cast Using Palm Kernel Shells Will Be Compared With That Of Normally Cast Block To Check For The Economy Of The Project.

A Comparison Between The Cost Of Material Used Will Be Done

ADVANTAGES OF PROJECT

It increases the speed of construction. It promotes green construction. Palm Kernel shells are more resistant towards crushing,

impact and abrasion. There is no need of treating Palm Kernel shells before

usage except for water absorption.

THE IMPLEMENTATION AREAS IN PROJECT

Re-designing of structural elements (columns and foundations) by using the results of the project. Cost estimation of the design will be made and compared with plain concrete.
