The earliest surviving record of observation dates from 364BC, based on comments by Chinese astronomer Gan De in a starcatalogue. By 28 BC, Chinese astronomers were regularly recording themin official imperial records.

The first clear mention of it in Western literature, around 300 BC, was bythe ancient Greek scholar Theophrastus, student of Plato and Aristotleand successor to the latter. A more recent observation was made on 17March 807 AD by the Benedictine monk Adelmus however, he incorrectlyconcluded he was observing a transit of Mercury. Many later observationswere also misinterpreted as planetary transits, until Galileo gave thecorrect explanation in 1612.

It was a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege,Mexican troops under President General Antonio Lopez de Santa Annalaunched an assault on the Mission near San Antonio de Bexar(modern-day San Antonio, Texas, United States), killing all of the Texiandefenders. Santa Anna’s cruelty during the battle inspired manyTexians-both Texas settlers and adventurers from the United States-to jointhe Texian Army. Buoyed by a desire for revenge, the Texians defeated theMexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto, on April 21, 1836, ending therevolution.

It has been immortalised by numerous works-books, songs, TV,movies-since 1843. However, most people are only familiar with the mythsspread by many of the movie and television adaptations.

“X, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People” is a play by Y. First performedon 14 February 1895 at the St James’s Theatre in London, it is a farcicalcomedy in which the protagonists maintain fictitious personae to escapeburdensome social obligations. Working within the social conventions oflate Victorian London, the play’s major themes are the triviality with whichit treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire ofVictorian ways. Contemporary reviews all praised the play’s humour, though some were cautious about its explicit lack of social messages, whileothers foresaw the modern consensus that it was the culmination of Y’sartistic career so far. Its high farce and witty dialogue have helped make XY’s most enduringly popular play. It has been adapted several times fortelevision, radio and film.
