The Birth of Cinema (1890-1900)

The history of film began in the 1890s, with the invention of the first motion-picture cameras and the establishment of the first film production companies and cinema.

The first public exhibition of projected motion pictures in America was at Koster and Bial's Music Hall in New York City on the 23rd of April 1896.

The Silent Era (1896-1931)

By 1930, silent film was practically extinct in the US and already being referred to as "the old medium”.

Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin, (16 April 1889 – 25 December 1977) was an English comic actor, filmmaker, and composer who rose to fame in the silent era. Chaplin became a worldwide icon through his screen persona "the Tramp" and is considered one of the most important figures in the history of the film industry

The Pre-Independence Period (1931-1947)

July 7th 1896, cinema was introduced to India When the Lumiere brothers' Cinematographer

showed six short silent films at Watson's Hotel in Bombay.

1896, Hiralal Sen started filming scenes of theatre productions in Calcutta, inspired by English professor Stephenson who had brought to India the country's first bioscope.

Harish Chandra Sakharam Bhatavdekar imported a camera from the London

1897, First Indian documentary, a wrestling match in Hanging Gardens, Bombay showed.

1913, Raja Harish Chandra released first full-length silent feature film.

Cinema in Pakistan: Timeline

The cinema of Pakistan refer to the Pakistan’s film industry. While Pakistan film industry is known as Lollywood. Therefore, the word Lollywood used for the Pakistani film industry.

The word "Lollywood" was first coined in magazine Glamour published from Karachi by a gossip columnist Saleem Nasir.

Lollywood industry based in the city of Lahore. Most of the feature films shot in Pakistan are in

Urdu language. There are many films shot in local languages like

Punjabi, Pashto, Balochi and Sindhi Few films also shot in English language as well.

Before 1971, Pakistan had three main film production centers: Lahore, Karachi and Dhaka.

August 7th 1948, first Pakistani feature film Teri Yaad was lunched at the Parbhat theatre, Lahore.

1946, Eveready pictures was established by J.C Anand.

1947, Evernew studios established in Lahore. April 7th 1950, film Do-Ansoo was released with

first silver jubilee status.

April 29th 1951, film Chanwey debut by first female director Madam Noor Jehan

1952, Jagga Daku produced by Faqir Ahmad Shah Directed by Saqlain Rizvi launched

June 3rd 1954, film Sassi released by Eveready Pictures reached golden jubilee status

April 1955, Famous Singer Ahmed Rushdi started his career after singing his first song in Pakistan "Bander Road Se Kemari".

March 12th 1956, First Sidhi Language Film Umar Marvi released.

July 17th First Nigar awards launched by film journalist Ilyas Rashidi

The '60s decade is often cited as being the golden age of cinema in Pakistan.

Many A-stars were introduced. in this period in time and became legends on the silver screen.

As black-and-white became obsolete. 1960, first color film Azra launched by Munshi. April 23rd 1964, Sangum first full-length colored

film released by Zahir Raihan First colored cinemascope film Mala launched.
