It was a day he vowed would never happen but on Saturday 27 September, George Clooney left his bachelor days behind him.

And the 53-year-old heartthrob was still celebrating on Sunday as he and his British human rights lawyer bride Amal Alamuddin, 36, hosted a brunch for family and friends at Hotel Cipriani in Venice.

The newlyweds made their first appearance as man and wife in a stylish watertaxi where they showed off their elegant wedding bands.

Perpetual bachelor George Clooney changed his ways for British-born Amal.

George and Amal soaked up the sun as they made one of their final journeys before becoming man and wife.

George and Amal couldn't take their eyes off each other when they sped through Venice, Italy, on Friday on taxi boats to their future wedding location.

She'll be wearing white on Saturday, but Amal Alamuddin opted for a red gown for a lavish dinner put on ahead of her and George Clooney's wedding.

George was seen making his way out of Da Ivo restaurant as he prepared to join his fiancé and her family at their hotel.

George spent his final night as a single man downing tequila shots and vintage red wine with his groomsmen.

George Clooney and his groomsmen enjoy some fine liquor after dinner at the exclusive five-star Cipriani Hotel on the nearby island of Giudecci.

The couple will host a star-studded reception in the city's seven-star Aman Hotel, an occasion that Amal's parents reportedly insisting on paying for.

Members of the staff took great care to ensure that they fix the flowers in the right positions.

Emily Blunt and Hollywood star Matt Damon were all spotted enjoying a few drinks as they waited for the bride and groom to arrive at local eatery Da Ivo.

Workers could be seen hauling in vast bouquets of ivory flowers, hinting at the colour scheme the pair have opted for.

Preparations are well underway for the big day, with scaffolding being erected at the Aman Canal Grande Venice, which is hosting the wedding party.

The jetty is expected to be the main entry point for guests arriving for George and his British fiancée Amal's nuptials.

George's actor buddy Matt Damon was spotted enjoying a cocktail reception along with the groom at the Belmond Hotel Cipriani on Saturday.

The Clooney clan hit the water on a water taxi. George was feeling joyous and didn't waste an opportunity to wave at fellow boat dwellers.

It's been over two decades since he was last married - to actress Talia Balsam.

The civil ceremony might have taken place but the marriage will not be registered until Monday.

The Venetian waterways were filled with taxis taking the 90 guests to the luxury hotel for the wedding reception.

The actor's relatives joined him on the water taxi that would take them to the luxury hotel on their wedding day.

Actor Bill Murray waves as he makes his way to the reception.

Bono stuck to his trademark black for his evening attire, but chose blue-tinted aviator sunglasses to wear for the night.

Cindy Crawford waits for the next water taxi to take them to the venue with her husband.

The supermodel accessorized her blue dress with sparkling silver and diamond jewelry.

Cindy waved at the many gathered Italians on the shore while they sped off to the hotel.

Emily Blunt and Matt Damon's wife Luciana Barroso opted for vibrant colored dresses for the event.

Emily and her husband John Krasinski joined Matt and Luciana on their way to the venue.

Emily's dress featured floral jewel-detail all over the blue material of the gown, with the neckline made up of the same colored stones.

George looked slightly anxious as he rubbed his hands together, but gave a friendly wave to other guests arriving.

George Clooney looked dapper in a black tuxedo as he arrived at the Aman Luxury hotel in Venice on Saturday afternoon.

It's been a whirlwind romance for George and Amal, who have been together less than a year.

The 53-year-old was accompanied by his father Nick as he made the 15-minute journey from the Cipriani hotel to the seven-star Amal resort, where he was meeting his bride-to-be.

George and his British wife will officially sign the marriage register at the palatial 14th century Ca' Farsetti palazzo on Monday afternoon.

Guests began arriving by chauffeur-driven taxi boats shortly before 6.30pm with Matt Damon the first to arrive.

Wave after wave of guests were ferried to the waterfront entrance of the exclusive hotel over a period of 20 mins, which culminated in Mr Clooney's arrival just before 7pm as the sun was setting.

Donning a sparkly dress, Clooney's mother steps on to a water taxi on Venice's Grand Canal last night following her son's marriage.

Following the ceremony, guests were apparently met with champagne and canapes. Above, Emily Blunt is seen making her way on to a water taxi.
