Introduction: HHRA
˃ Fate and Transport Modeling provides a means to estimate the movement and alteration of “chemicals” as they move through environmental media including air, soil, surface water, and sediment; and interaction with biological systems including flora, fauna, and human receptors
˃ Exposure Modeling includes identification of the exposure pathways by which “chemicals” may reach individuals Estimating how much of a chemical an individual is likely
to be exposed to
Estimating the potential health effects (e.g., cancer, non-cancer, short-term)
7© 2016 Trinity Consultants | Riverstone Environmental | All rights reserved
BREEZE Risk Analyst
˃ Human health and Ecological risk assessment modelling suite developed to perform multi-media fate and transport and exposure modeling
˃ For estimating potential adverse impacts to human health and ecological receptors
˃ Food-web based ecological risk assessment modeling
˃ Highly flexible GIS based modelling, data analysis and reporting system

˃ Originally developed to support RCRA Hazardous Waste Combustion Permitting
˃ Guidance includes:
Risk Assessment Methodologies♦ Chemical selection process
♦ Air Dispersion Modeling
♦ Exposure scenario and pathway selection
 Fate, Transport, and Exposure Equations
 Chemical Database
 Recommended Parameter Defaults

original role in RCRA Permitting. Example include:
Air Toxics Risk Assessment (ATRA) Reference Library
 Cumulative/Community Risk Assessments
 Toxic Tort/Odor Nuisance Litigation
Environmental Impact Statements (NEPA – EIS)
 Environmental Justice
 Residual Risk
 Ecological Risk
 Air Quality Studies
HHRAP Module
˃ BREEZE Risk Analyst - Fully implements the USEPA HHRAP
˃ Chemical Database includes over 400 HHRAP chemicals

dibenzofurans (PCDFs)
 Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
 Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
 Nitroaromatics
 Phthalates
Other organics (e.g., Benzene, Cumene, 1,3-Butadiene)

Development Objectives
˃ The objective was to develop a highly flexible GIS-
based modeling, data delivery, analysis, and reporting
system that integrates multi-media and multi-pathway
fate and transport, exposure, and health effects
modeling including cancer risks, non-cancer hazards,
and short-term acute effects
˃ The system is designed to provide a platform upon which to support the evolving requirements and environmental challenges of many of today’s most important regulatory and non-regulatory applications.
Development Objectives
˃ Support multiple air dispersion models (e.g., ISC,
AERMOD, CALPUFF, SCIPUFF)
˃ Support multiple air modeling result output formats
˃ Highly transparent - eliminate “black box” modeling
˃ Provide a scalable modeling system – “Risk Modules”
˃ Support multiple application formats
˃ Support multiple user communities (e.g., risk assessors,
regulators, permit writers, risk managers, consultants,
industry, community and public interest groups)
13© 2016 Trinity Consultants | Riverstone Environmental | All rights reserved

˃ Modern user interface – Microsoft “Ribbon Bar”
˃ Intuitive process flow designed to follow steps in the risk assessment process
˃ Efficient data storage and managed project files ensure projects are easily transportable between users
˃ Advanced error logging and numeric validation reporting options
˃ Highly flexible air modeling import wizard provides users with the tools necessary to import modeling results from a wide variety of air dispersion models (e.g., ISCST3, AERMOD, CALPUFF, and SCIPUFF) and in multiple data formats
˃ Fully editable and comment-enabled chemical database
˃ Unprecedented Base Map format and data import/export options
˃ Advanced attribute and geospatial selection tools
Features
˃ Detailed parameter and equation descriptions and reference information provided using selection sensitive property grid controls.
˃ Advanced text and drawing annotation tools enable the generation of graphically rich custom maps and report figures.
˃ Convenient HHRAP equation parameter matrix included to quickly identify equations and the location of individual input parameters.
˃ Mercury Wizard guides users of all experience levels through the process of mercury speciation and phase allocation.
˃ Powerful water body and watershed identification and delineation tools.
˃ Fully Transparent Results – the user has full access to equations, input parameters, and intermediate calculations
