THE VALUE OF OUR TREES

FOOTSCRAY PRIMARY SCHOOL

In 2013, our School was home to 102 trees.

We have 20 species of trees. 30% of our trees are eucalypts

Nearly 80% of our trees are medium in size (5-10m tall)

A tree’s canopy cover helps with shade for students, habitat for

fauna, removing carbon and pollutants from the air, and slowing

down heavy stormflows that can damage waterways.

90% of our trees are in good canopy health.

Our poplars, pines and gums provide the greatest amount of canopy

cover. These are generally our oldest and largest trees.

20% of our trees have an amenity value of over $5000 each. This

value will grow if the tree itself has more chance to grow.

The large Canadian Poplar on Geelong Rd is worth $28,000. With the

EcoMasterplan, we will greatly enhance more trees.

THE VALUE OF ALL OUR TREES

FOOTSCRAY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Footscray Primary School’s 102 trees were achieving in 2013

- 20 tonnes of carbon storage (mostly in trunk) $487

- 1.6 tonnes of carbon sequestered (mostly by leaves) $39

- 15 kg of pollution removal (air pollutant land on leaves instead of potentially going into lungs) $7.35

- 22 m3 of rainfall interception (slowing down big rain events that can erode waterways if they are gushing too fast) $52

- 430Kwh annual heating benefits (saving on the need for indoor heating by buffering cold breezes) $150

- 833 Kwh annual cooling benefits (saving on the need for indoor cooling by shading buildings) $290

- Amenity value of the tree (its beauty and contribution to the community) $252, 755

THE VALUE OF AN AVERAGE TREE

FOOTSCRAY PRIMARY SCHOOL

An average tree at Footscray Primary School is:

- Storing 197kg of carbon mostly in its trunk

- Removing another 15kg of carbon out of the atmosphere each

year during photosynthesis where leaves convert sunlight to

energy

- Removing 154 grams of air pollution by capturing pollutants (that

mostly come from cars) on its leaves

- Intercepting 0.22m3 of rainfall helping to prevent flooding, and

prevent erosion of our Maribyrnong River

- Saving 4.2Kwh of energy for indoor heating by sheltering from

breezes, and 8.1Kwh of energy for indoor cooling by shading

buildings on hot days

- Providing $2478 of amenity value to the school for its beauty
